THE MODEST PROPOSAL

The Modest Proposal, a 5-piece alternative rock band from Freeport High School, took top honors Saturday night in Reindeer Record’s Off-Ramp: Exit 26 statewide high school rock band competition held at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center.

After six months of music industry tasks that framed the core of Reindeer’s competition, it was down to eight bands (one band was disqualified on Friday when a previously-known scheduling conflict was revealed).  Each band delivered their final live set, introduced by their self-produced music video projected on the PAC’s 36-foot high definition screen, and then the crowd of enthusiastic fans awaited the results.

The Off-Ramp Awards Presentation acknowledged many individual musicians for their outstanding performances, and celebrated the achievements of the top three bands in each task:  Songwriting, The Recording Studio Experience, Marketing, Live Event Production and Music Video Production (see complete list of award recipients below).

When it was all over, The Modest Proposal easily earned the title of “Best Young Band in the State of Maine” and the cash prize of $1,000 for each player, for a collective win of $5,000.

The Modest Proposal consists of Charlie Hayes – Bass / Vocals, Angus MacDonald – Guitar / Vocals, Luke MacDonald – Keyboards / Percussion / Vocals, Philip Rogers – Lead Vocals / Guitar and David Vitali – Drums.

The Off-Ramp is a funding and awareness effort for Reindeer’s bigger goal to create a music industry-based curriculum for Maine’s Alternative Education students.

Louis Philippe, Reindeer President and Off-Ramp Executive Producer, touted the debut of The Off-Ramp as a huge undertaking and a huge success.  “This type of event emphatically underscores Reindeer’s ‘process-vs-product’ philosophy and was tremendously successful in giving some well-deserving young musicians an opportunity to learn, grow, experience, network and live the life of a musician for six months.”

“It’s no secret, we need contributions from individuals, organizations and businesses who can appreciate what alternative education is all about, ” Philippe said.  The on-going push for funding will continue,” he noted, “as we also begin plans to launch The Off-Ramp: Exit 27 this fall.  Anyone who wishes to donate to the curriculum is invited to contact Reindeer at www.reindeergroup.org.  Reindeer is a nonprofit 501c3 organization and contributions are tax-deductible.
