Passing Lane

PASSING LANE, a four-piece band representing Deering High School, Portland High School and Waynflete, walked away with top honors Sunday as Reindeer Records’ 22nd Annual Rock-Off competition came to a close for another year. The band won $1,000 and the title of “Best Young Band in the State of Maine,” along with some recording studio time donated by Tonezone Studios of Scarborough.

A crowd of 350+ kids, teens and adults of all ages filled McAuley Performing Arts Center to experience an incredible show that featured the top five high school bands determined from previous rounds of evaluations: THE GLORIA RED from Biddeford HS/Thornton Academy, NORWOOD from Deering HS, ROCKSMYTHE from York HS, and THE SHAMS, a homeschooled band from Gray.

The festivities kicked off with a crowd-pleasing guest appearance by WAITING ON IAN, a participating band from Georges Valley HS in Thomaston, who were recipients of this year’s Producer’s Award. Every band brought the enthusiastic house to cheers and standing ovations.

“This year’s top five were clearly a cut above in terms of their amazing gifts and professional growth,” said Louis Philippe, RO Executive Producer and Reindeer President. “The level of musicianship was superb and the quality of the songwriting showed some seasoned maturity, making this year’s event one of the best displays of great local talent.”

PASSING LANE delivered their trademark blend of funk, rock, jazz fusion and alternative, all with confidence and class. But it was the group’s ability to switch musicians on several instruments each—all with equal top-notch performance skills—that factored into winning the Judges votes.

The star-studded line-up of 11 judges included a variety of local and regional musicians, radio personnel plus two writers from Boston’s Northeast Performer Magazine. Also spotted in the crowd, on hand to observe the bevy of talent, were folks from WCYY and WTOS as well as other industry reps.

The entire event was captured on tape by the crew of Adelphia Cable’s popular show NO HIT VIDEOS which will be broadcasting interviews and performances at a later date.

The Annual Rock-Off Awards Presentation provided an opportunity to recognize many bands and individual musicians for outstanding efforts in various categories. [Complete list is attached].

This was the second time in the competition for PASSING LANE, Philippe said. “Though they didn’t come in the top five last year, they obviously worked hard on developing their skills and getting their act together.”

Band members include Wes Engel on vocals, guitar, piano and drums; Jay Glover on bass, saxophone and vocals; Justin Glover on guitar, drums and vocals; and Aaron Peisner on vocals, guitar, piano and drums.
