O.R.B.I.T.S., a five-piece band representing Maranacook High School in Readfield, walked away with top honors Sunday as Reindeer Records’ 21st Annual Rock-Off competition came to a close for another year. The band won $1,000 and the title of “Best Young Band in the State of Maine,” along with some recording studio time donated by Tonezone Studios of Scarborough.

A capacity crowd of kids, teens and adults of all ages filled McAuley Performing Arts Center to experience an incredible show that featured the top five high school bands determined from previous rounds of evaluations: GRAND SLAM BREAKFAST and INTEROBANG, both representing Erskine Academy; MIDRIFF from Scarborough HS; THE SHAMS, a homeschooled band; and O.R.B.I.T.S.

There were also two crowd-pleasing guest appearances by FREE REFILLS of Cape Elizabeth HS, which won the Producer’s Award, and Reindeer Recording Artists ALTERIA. Every band put on a spectacular performance that brought the enthusiastic house to cheers and numerous standing ovations.

“It was one of the best shows the Rock-Off has seen in years,” said Producer Louis Philippe. “The turnout was far beyond my expectations, and the quality of the performances simply raised the bar to a higher standard for next year’s bands…a clear affirmation of each band’s amazing gifts and professional growth.”

The Annual Rock-Off Awards Presentation provided an opportunity to recognize many bands and individual musicians for outstanding efforts in various categories. [Complete list is attached].

This was the second time in the competition for O.R.B.I.T.S., Philippe said. “Though they didn’t come in the top five last year, they obviously worked hard on developing their skills and getting their act together.”

Band members include Dean Grondin on guitar, Peter Herman on lead guitar, Willy Herman on bass, John Mrazik on drums and Sam Watson, lead vocals.
