EIGHT BANDS FINE-TUNE FOR 9TH ANNUAL FLARO COMPETITION

February 16, 2005

Eight young high school bands from the Central Florida region are busy getting their acts together in hopes of being named ‘Best Young Band in Central Florida,” as Reindeer Records presents the 9th Annual Florida Rock-Off. The bands will take to the stage of BOOMERZ, a well-known club in Seminole in an all-ages marathon of talent slated for Saturday, March 5 at 5 PM and Sunday, March 13 at 2 PM.

The Florida Rock-Off, or ‘FLARO” as it has been coined,” began in 1996 and has since provided a platform for exposure and experience to hundreds of musicians from Orlando to St. Petersburg, Sarasota to Tampa, Clearwater to Hudson and everywhere in between. The focus is on ‘competition” and not ‘concert,” said Louis Philippe, Reindeer President and FLARO Executive Producer, who explained that every band faces several evaluations based on music industry criteria. ‘It not just how well a band plays in one stage show, it’s about the entire package,” he noted.

This year’s slate of participants reflects an eclectic array of genres and experience levels that make for a very interesting and entertaining show, according to Philippe. ‘The passion and quality of talent are definitely at an all-time high.”

The line-up for the live showcase performances is as follows:

SATURDAY, MARCH 5, 5 PM
OPENING GUEST BAND: HINDSIGHT (Crystal River HS); UNEXPECTED GUEST (IDS, Jesuit, Tampa Catholic, Hillsborough HS); DEATHBED DECEMBER (Pinellas Park HS); STRANGE BREW (Newsome HS); and TEN SPEED INDIAN (Cypress Lake HS).

SUNDAY, MARCH 13, 2 PM

OPENING GUEST BAND: CHUMLEY’S TOY (Represented River Ridge HS in FLARO2, and is still going strong); GOOD GRAEFF (Riverview HS); EFFUSION (Countryside HS); THE ROCKIN’ BLUE FLAMINGOS (Freedom HS); OZELL (Newsome and Blake HS); and CLOSING GUEST BAND: ALTERIA (Reindeer Recording Artist discovered in the Maine Rock-Off).

At the end of the show on March 13th, the top five finalists who will then proceed to the Finals on April 17, will be announced. In addition to the title of ‘Best Young Band,” the winning band wins $1,000 to help with their career goals.

Last year’s winning band, INITIAL DOUBT which represented Tarpon, Dunedin and East Lake High Schools, is scheduled to return to the FLARO Winner’s Circle to ‘pass the torch of victory” to this year’s winning band.
